  1. skin care products with cucumber

Flawless skin is unrealistic for most women.  Factors like age, genetics, diet and environment all contribute to the health and condition of your skin. However, regardless of these factors you can greatly improve your skin's appearance by using products with certain skin care ingedients in them.

You may not get flawless skin but you can get healthy, beautiful skin.

Today marks the beginning of what I'm calling the Healthy Skin Ingredient Series.

For the next couple of months, I'll be sharing with you a number of beneficial ingredients that you should look for in your skin care products.

    skin care information

People are constantly looking for a long list of benefits when buying skin care products and rightfully so.  However, you set yourself up for disappointment if you think you can find a product to take care of your skin that answers it all:

    Does it moisturize?

Does it protect my skin from the sun?

Will it even my skin tone?

    Does it minimize oil production?

    Does it prevent wrinkles?

Does it make me look like Beyonce?  No way in....

Instead of looking for products that do it all (which don't exist), shop for your skin care products in two ways:

    1. By Skin Type
    2. By Ingredients that can produce the results you are seeking

For example, if you have oily skin, you wouldn't look for a product that is oil based.

    skin care fragrance

When it comes to buying skin care products, you'll be hard pressed to find products with no fragrance.  Most moisturizers and even cleansers contain fragrance in them because that fragrance is used to mask the scent of the other ingredients in the product that don't smell very good.  Also, the cosmetics manufacturers are aware that us women like to buy products that smell "pretty."

The problem with skin care fragrance (specifically if you have dry or sensitive skin) is they cause skin irritations and allergic reactions.

    Not all scent is bad

Fragrances are composed of artificial ingredients and harsh alcohols; another reason why it should not be a part of your skin care products if you have dry or sensitive skin.

So, how do you enjoy products with a delightful scent without including fragrance?  Simple.

    emollients

A few days ago I shared with you how you need to make sure your summer moisturizer has humectants in them.  Now, let's flip it a bit and look at another popular skin care ingredient...Emollients.

What you don't need in your skin care products is emollients.  Sure, popular brands use them but if you have dry skin conditions, emollients like lanolin, mineral oil, and petroleum do nothing for your skin.

Emollients are skin care ingredients that lubricate the skin.

    humectants

Ever wonder what ingredient in your moisturizer causes the moisture to absorb and soften the skin?

There are certain ingredients called humectants that absorb water from the air and help your skin to retain the moisture.  If you have very scaly or thick skin like people who have eczema, you'll want to use a product that contains humectants during the warm months of the year.  The reason is humectants require high levels of humidity to be most effective.

So what should you look for on the label of your moisturizer?  Of course you won't see the word "humectants" on the label but there are other ingredients to look for that are humectants: alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), urea, vegetable glycerin, panthenol, vitamin E, collagen, elastin, and aloe vera.

There are natural and synthetic humectants so not all humectants are good for your skin.  Some of synthetic humectants to avoid are: propylene glycol, propanediol, and non-vegetable glycerin.

Propylene glycol is one of the worst offenders as it is used as an anti-freeze for cars.

While humectants may be your a friend to your skin (your hair too), they are most effective in your skin care products during the warm months of the year.

    skin care routine

Your skin care routine should be simple: Cleanse, Tone, Moisturize and..........Exfoliate.  It doesn't matter if you are a woman of color or not.  The basics still remain.

  7. Just wanted to give you a heads up that I will be shortly distributing some free mini skin care guides for the various skin types so look out for that.

We are in our second week of Ethnic Skin Care Month and I hope you are learning as much about women of color's skin care concerns and needs as much as I am.  It's funny how just when you think you knew it all, there's something new to be learned!

So, look out for your skin care guides.  They will contain tips, recipes and recommended products for your skin type.
