About the Dead Sea and Dead Sea Minerals

The use of Dead Sea Cosmetics are becoming increasingly more popular.  This is because the minerals that come from the Dead Sea have a very positive effect on the skin. Dead Sea Salts are similar to those found in human cells. Medical research has proven that Dead Sea Salt and minerals have increasing, positive effect on skin cell regeneration.  Due to the human aging process, diet and other factors, our bodies can be depleted of vital salts and minerals.  Dead Sea salt helps to replenish the cells, hydrate the skin and also work as an anti-aging force.  Mud from the Dead Sea contains minerals that aid in alleviating dry skin and healing up wounds. People who have suffered with conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne, arthritis and other conditions have been positively treated with Dead Sea products (see Foot Scrub).

At it's deepest point, the Dead Sea is 400 meters deep and is located in a remote location close to Jerusalem. It is located in what's called the Syro-African Rift which is a fault at the lowest point on the earth.  Because of this, the environment was unable to pollute the sea and the precious minerals were preserved.  Water does not drain from the Dead Sea but, it evaporates.  The minerals thus remain and the salt content increases.  The salt content is estimated to be anwhere between 26 and 35%.  That's more than your average table salt ! (remember, salt is a natural preservative.) The level of the Dead Sea continues to drop.  The southern end is no longer under water except for when it is channeled to extract the precious minerals.  One of the most valuable minerals collected from the Dead Sea is Potash.  Potash is used to manufacture soap, glass and is used as fertilizer for plants.

Meaning of Dead Sea: Sea of Salt

The name of the Dead Sea was not always known or referred to as so.  That name was given as Christianity grew. Ancient people called it by various other names.

Some Historic Names of the Dead Sea:

  • In the Old Testament: Sea of Plains
  • Greek: Lake Asphaltites
  • Arabic: al-Bahr al-Mayyit; Sea of Zoʼar (Sea of Lot)
  • Hebrew: Yam Hamelech
